Our air wing commander summoned VF-2 and VF-1 to the O-club to announce which fighter squadron he would nominate for the Admiral Joseph Clifton Award, which recognized the Navy’s top fighter squadron. We hustled over with high anticipation to accept the honor we just knew must be ours.

It wasn’t. “I’ve selected VF-1 as my nominee for the Clifton!” he announced.

I hope our faces didn’t show what we were thinking. Actually I hope they did. Soon enough our T-shirts sure did. We had some made up and wore them proudly. They listed our first-place wins. Fighter Derby … High Noon … TARPS Derby … CHAMPS!

Well, can’t win ‘em all.
